From dead insects to broken hand sinks, health inspectors in Missouri and Kansas found numerous violations at Kansas City area restaurants last week.

Dining establishments like sit-down restaurants, drive-thrus, gas stations and grocery stores are required to get food inspections, and governments have to release those inspections to the public.

In Kansas City, the city’s health department enforces the food code while in Kansas, the state’s Department of Agriculture handles inspections. The lower the number of violations, the better.

Most restaurants correct violations at the time of the original inspection or shortly thereafter. The full inspections show how each establishment has corrected or is working to correct any remaining violations. They are available for Kansas City at inspectionsonline.us/foodsafety/mousakansascity/search.htm and Johnson County at agriculture.ks.gov.

Here are the restaurants in Kansas City and Johnson County that received seven or more critical violations or priority/priority foundation violations from August 24 to Sept. 1. During that time, no restaurants in Wyandotte County reached this threshold.

In addition, The Star included reports of the worst-performing restaurants for the last two weeks.

Geo’s Gourmet Sweets

  • 12805 S. Murlen Rd., Olathe
  • 11 priority and priority foundation violations for an Aug. 27 routine inspection

Dozens of large and small flies circled the Olathe Brazilian bakery and some landed on breads and buns. The inspector found food items stored on the floor and the hot water broken on the hand sink. The report stated, “Hot water handle just spins.”

The scheduled follow-up inspection has not yet occurred. Read the full report for Geo’s by searching for the restaurant on the Kansas inspection lookup.

Tanner’s Bar and Grill

  • 14337 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park
  • 9 priority and priority foundation violations for an Aug. 26 routine inspection

Winged insects floated in a bottle of liquor at this sports bar off of 143rd and Metcalf. A ready-to-eat chicken wrap sat in a refrigerator without a date marking, and an employee did not know when it was made.

No follow-up inspection was scheduled. Read the full report for Tanner’s by searching for the restaurant on the Kansas inspection lookup.

Troost Mart

  • 4047 Troost Ave.
  • 9 critical violations for an Aug. 25 routine inspection

The inspector found multiple dead insects throughout this gas station convenience store near Hyde Park, in addition to droppings in the cigarette storage area. Some ceiling tiles were stained and some floor tiles were broken.

The restaurant still had three critical violations after the Sept. 2 follow-up inspection. Read the full report for Troost Mart.
